Mental Health Services for Children Who Witness Domestic Violence.

Mongolian women struggle to be heard in a country where politics are dominated by males. The women appealed to Mrs. Bush for support in their work against poverty, domestic violence and other social ills. 65% of college students in Mongolia are women, but in politics females constitute only five of 76 members of the parliament, one of 18 Cabinet ministers and 1 of 31 governors. The women who met with the first lady were frank about the problems in providing for its 2.5 million people, more than a third of whom live in poverty. Its health system is in shambles, infant mortality on the rise and many in the capital lack running water and sewage. "We have the same problem with households headed by single women with lower incomes," the first lady said. She urged the women to do what they can to mentor younger women and children. Civic groups are lobbying to mandate that a certain number of parliamentary seats go to women. Help from the U.S. Embassy in monitoring polls during recent elections had helped ensure the vote was "free and fair." But in most areas of politics, a lack of transparency and high levels of corruption tend to shut women out.

Domestic violence can wipe out a child's confidence and leave them shocked.

Abolish school fees; enact legislation to create a level playing field for women, and to prevent and respond to gender-based violence; ensure women's participation in politics; involve women's organizations in policy development; Engage men so the importance of gender equality can be understood by all.

Women are running domestic violence shelters and fighting human-trafficking. Without recognition or fanfare, and often with little support, women are working to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of all people.

Urbanization is occurring so rapidly that cities are not able to keep up with increased demand for services, not to mention the employment, housing, and transportation needs of a population that may double in less than 25 years. Three-quarters of those living in the cities of the developing world live in slum-like conditions, often without access to sanitation and safe drinking water, associated with increased health problems. Urban slums have much higher rates of illness than nonslum areas of the same cities and health and social problems related to the environment, violence, injury, and noncommunicable diseases are more common.

Habiba Sarobi is Afghanistan's first female governor, a major advance where under the Taliban, women were denied everything from school lessons to lipstick. Sarobi is a mild- mannered married woman who comes to work with a briefcase and her secretary. She turned down an ambassadorial post to demand the job as governor of Bamiyan province. At first 300 local men, bused in by the outgoing governor, staged a noisy protest but support for her has swelled rapidly. A crowd of 1,000 men gave her a standing ovation at a game of buzkashi. In the next few days, delegations of well-wishers flooded in from around the province. Nobody is expecting a revolution in the treatment of women. Afghan women now can vote, work and go to school, and a quarter of all seats to be filled in next September's parliamentary vote are reserved for women. But in Badakhshan province, one mother in 15 dies in childbirth, forced marriage and domestic violence are rife throughout the nation, and women are still stoned to death for adultery. During her two- year stint as minister of women's affairs, she concentrated more on disbursing aid than making policy. She was stymied by conservative Cabinet colleagues, who blocked a decree condemning forced marriage. In her new job, her popularity stems partly from a solid political pedigre, and partly from the liberalism of her fellow Hazara. After the Taliban seized power she fled to Pakistan so her daughter could continue school. She detested the burqa but found it a useful disguise when she slipped across the border to establish a network of 35 underground girls' schools, each with 25 to 35 students, which she managed from Pakistan. The schools avoided arousing suspicion because the girls arrived at the schools at irregular intervals and from different directions. Harnessing the shrine where two giant Buddha statues stood, now blasted apart by Taliban rockets, tourist potential is one of Sarobi's main reconstruction projects. She will benefit from the political capital invested in her by Karzai and the local security chief is behind her. Even former governor has lent his support, at least for now.

Sumayah Ali Raja, chair of the Yemen-French Forum, will run in the September 2006 presidential elections. Raja will be the first woman to run for president of Yemen and her candidacy would help all Yemeni women attain their legal and constitutional rights. She called upon the Yemeni political parties and civil society organisations to support her. Prime Minister Abdul-Qader Ba-Jammal encouraged women to fight for their rights, pointing out that Yemen was a country of queens. The prime minister promised that his government would take the conference's recommendations into consideration, and comply with international conventions ratified by Yemen regarding women. He urged political parties to adopt a quota system that would give women 15% of the parliamentary seats. But many others had not expected Raja's announcement. Observers say it was an ideal opportunity to publicise a future female president. It is difficult to sway people about the role of women in society so it will be difficult for them to accept a female president. The Yemeni people and the political elite believe women can hold some high government posts, but not positions of great power. A conference statement noted that "violence against women and unequal opportunity in the Arab world are still prevalent." The participants urged Arab governments that have not ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) to do so immediately. It criticised some signatories for having passed legislation contradicting CEDAW principles. The conference called for actions to guarantee greater female representation in the political process, such as a quota system and the appointment of women to executive and judiciary positions. It urged the improvement of women's education and elimination of the female illiteracy in the Arab world through free and compulsory education. The conference also recommended that civil organisations should be granted a role in drafting legislation and overseeing its implementation. The conference also advocated the "right of return" for Palestinian refugees displaced by Israeli occupation, and the "release of all female Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons." It also called for terminating "the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Representatives from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan took part in the symposium. The symposium's main aim was to unify Arab women, to fight for their legal rights.
