The success of teaching molecular and atomic phenomena depends on the didactical strategy and the media selection adopted, in consideration of the level of abstraction of the subject to be taught and the students' capability to deal with abstract operations. Dale's cone of experience was employed to plan three 50-minute classes to discuss protein denaturation from a chemical point of view. Only low abstraction level activities were selected: (i) two demonstrations showing the denaturation of albumin by heating and by changing the solvent, (ii) the assembly of a macroscopic model representing the protein molecule, and (iii) a role-play for simulating glucagon synthesis. A student-centered approach and collaborative learning were used throughout the classes. The use of macroscopic models is a powerful didactical strategy to represent molecular and atomic events. They can convert microscopic entities into touchable objects, reducing the abstraction level required to discuss chemistry with high school students. Thus, interesting topics involving molecules and their behavior can take place efficiently when mediated by concrete experiences.
Short-term studies have suggested that protein exerts a more positive effect on satiety per calorie than both carbohydrate and fat.47-49 However, this may not translate into eating fewer calories.
Protein Synthesis Activity - Teachable
Students teach themselves the sequence of DNA-Translation (DNA-mRNA-tRNA-protein), and practice with DNA codes which translate into amino acid sequences spelling out meaningful sentences in English!
This kit is intended for teaching students in a practical course doing experiments related to gene expression and protein synthesis.
The "Protein Expression Reagent Kit" provides sufficient reagents to conduct one "Cell-Free Protein Synthesis Course" for 20 students. In the experimental outline, it is assumed that two students perform the experiments together, and therefore reagents are provided for 10 groups/sets of experiments.
During this "Cell-Free Protein Synthesis Course", experiments are performed to demonstrate both steps of protein biosynthesis: Transcription of an mRNA from a DNA template and translation of the mRNA into a functional protein. The kit provides a DNA template for the expression of a Green Fluorescent Protein, or "GFP", that can easily be detected by exhibiting bright green light upon exposure to blue or ultraviolet light. Visibility of the green light proves that a functional protein had been prepared during the "Cell-Free Protein Synthesis Course".
Specific instrumentation for doing the experiments can be purchased separately as a "Laboratory Instrument Set".

The is the location of the translation of proteins, the Ribosome has 3 tRNA binding sites the which holds the tRNA with the polypeptide strand, the A site which binds to the tRNA molecule with the next amino acid to be hydrolysed and the E site which holds the tRNA molecule to be discharged. The mRNA strand is attached to the tRNA strand by and also attached to the .
