The synthesis of propylene carbonate (PC) from 1,2-propylene glycol (PG) and CO2 was investigated. Among a series of acetate salts, zinc acetate showed the highest catalytic activity. Under the suitable reaction conditions (reaction temperature, 433 K; weight percentage of catalyst, 2.5%; reaction time, 2 h; molar ratio of acetonitrile to PG, 1.8:1; and initial pressure of CO2, 3.0 MPa), the conversion of PG, the yield of PC, and the selectivity of PC were 19.2%, 12.3%, and 64.1%, respectively. The reaction mechanism for the synthesis of PC from CO2 and PG over zinc acetate catalyst was elucidated by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC−MS), in situ infrared (IR) analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization.

To synthesize high molecular weight poly(propylene fumarate) (PPF), fumaryl chloride and propylene glycol were reacted in the presence of potassium carbonate, which serves as a proton scavenger. Transesterification of the resulting low molecular weight oligomer led to a polymer with greater molecular weight than those from previous reaction methods without requiring the use of a catalyst. According to two-dimensional NMR, the backbone structure of this polymer was as expected and contained no byproducts formed by acid catalyzed addition across the fumarate double bond. Kinetic studies of the transesterification showed that the molecular weight reached a final M(n) of 4900 (±700)) and MW 9100 (±1300) after 16 h, while the polydispersity index remained below 1.8 throughout the reaction. Thus the PPF synthesized by the new method is of higher molecular weight and greater purity than our previously prepared material.

The synthesis of propylene carbonate (PC) from 1,2-propylene glycol (PG) and CO2 was investigated

On the basis of thermodynamic analysis for the synthesis of propylene carbonate from urea and 1,2-propylene glycol (PG), the catalytic properties of zinc acetate have been studied. The optimal reaction conditions are as follows: molar ratio of urea to PG, 2:8; reaction time, 3 h; reaction temperature, 170 °C; molar ratio of zinc acetate to PG, 1:148. The highest yield of propylene carbonate is 94%. Then the immobilization of zinc acetate is investigated in order to facilitate recovery and reuse of the catalyst. The suitable support is activated carbon, and the optimal load of zinc acetate is 15 wt %; the highest yield of propylene carbonate is 78%. The analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer−Emmett−Teller surface area analysis, and atomic absorption spectroscopy for the catalysts used both before and after reaction shows that both some changes and severe loss of zinc acetate have taken place during the process of the reaction.
