Many students (including the author) take a one-semester fundamental chemistry lecture and laboratory course (CHEM 102) that surveys the basics of organic chemistry and biochemistry (Van Lanen, 2000). It is organized around topics of organic chemistry, but with some biological perspective (Miner, 1948; Isom, 2006). This course is often required for students in health-oriented programs, especially the nursing program (at the University of South Carolina, Chemistry 102 is required in the nursing curriculum, as shown ), and it may also serve as a laboratory science for students in other fields of study (Price, 1976; Mamantov and Wyatt, 1978). Emphasis for this course is often placed on selected principles relevant to the understanding of human biological functions and related medical aspects. However, this course is often seen by students as a difficult and professionally irrelevant barrier in pursuing a career in medicine or nursing. Moreover, even though knowing detailed chemical properties of organic molecules is not a main objective for this course, students are required to comprehend some basic organic reactions, especially those closely related to biochemical processes of the human body. Some typical examples are the oxidation of an alcohol, the formation of a disulfide bond, carboxylic acid and amine dissociation, esterification, and amide formation. However, learning organic reactions for non-science major students has often been unpleasant (Rowe, 1983; Burgess and Bino, 1988).

1. Creation and Authority. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was established by the Organic Act of March 3, 1879 (20 Stat. 394; 43 U.S.C. 31), et seq. which provided for "the classification of the public lands and examination of the geological structure, mineral resources, and products of the national domain." The Act of September 5, 1962 (76 Stat. 427; 43 U.S.C. 31(b)) expanded this authorization to include such examinations outside the national domain. Topographic mapping and chemical and physical research were recognized as an essential part of the investigations and studies authorized by the Organic Act, and specific provision was made for them by Congress in the Act of October 2, 1888 (25 Stat. 505, 526).

Although our Chemistry 102 textbooks can often be very helpful when studying and learning the necessary reactions, sometimes students can feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the reaction mechanisms introduced in the textbooks. We attempt to alleviate this anxiety by demonstrating to students how many of these reactions are interrelated and how that, if a reaction is learned, the reverse reaction or any similar reactions can be easily remembered. Chemistry textbooks often do not clearly show these relationships, nor are these relationships always reiterated in the classroom. Students can also be confused or discouraged by various example questions given in the textbook if the molecules given are chemically complex. It is helpful to show students that these example reactions can be simplified (and more easily learned) by looking only at the essential “skeleton” of the reaction – the functional groups. This article describes how to help students understand and utilize some important organic reactions without being overwhelmed by the reaction mechanisms.

This review attempts to survey the recent advances in understanding and use of the sigmatropic rearrangements, stress being upon stereoselectivity and regiospecifity in the applications to organic synthesis. There are included the Cope and Claisen rearrangements, along with a number of their variations, such as the oxy-Cope, thio-and amino-Claisen rearrangemets, and Carrol reaction as well as the Saucy-Marbet, Meerwein-Eschenmoser, Johnson, and Thomas methods. Furthermore, the review deals with the synthetic potential utility of new rearrangements in which two or more hetero-atoms are part of the rearranging system.
[2, 3] -Sigmatropic rearrangement is formally classified into four groups, that is, (1) anionic, (2) carbene, (3) lone-pair electron, and (4) ylide rearrangements. Synthetic potentiality of each group is discussed.

Shigeru Yamago received his B.S. and Ph.D in chemistry from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1986 and 1991, respectively, under the supervision of Professor Eiichi Nakamura. During that time, he joined Professor Peter Vollhardt’s group at U.C. Berkeley as a summer student (1988). He became an assistant professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1991 in the group of Professor Eiichi Nakamura and then moved to Kyoto University in 1995 in the group of Professor Jun-ichi Yoshida. He was a Visiting Scientist in Dr. Chryssostomos Chatgilialoglu’s group at Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Bologna (2000). In 2003, he was appointed Professor of Osaka City University. He had been a Research Fellow of PRESTO program in the Japan Science and Technology Agency from 2002 to 2006. In 2006, he joined Institute for Chemical Research at Kyoto University where he holds Professorship. He received the Incentive Award in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan, in 2001. His research interests include synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, radical chemistry, and element chemistry.
