The Department of Human and Molecular Genetics offers training that combines preparation for a career as a genetic counselor with research-based doctoral training in a coordinated program that integrates the complementary aspects of these two degree categories. In order to be admitted to this dual-degree program, an applicant must be accepted into both the M.S. and Ph.D. programs.

I am responsible for teaching “Genetics, Law and Social Policy” to the first and second year genetic counseling students. I also teach Health Law and Ethics at The Heller School and Genetics, Law, and Society in the Legal Studies Program. I am also on the faculty of Boston College Law School and Tufts Medical School. Prior to teaching at Brandeis, I taught at the Harvard School of Public Health.

After graduating from the Brandeis GC program in 1996, I have spent many years as a clinic-based prenatal genetic counselor in different settings throughout the Boston area. In addition to my full-time clinical genetic counseling position at South Shore Hospital, I teach Human Reproductive and Development Biology to 1st year GC students and Brandeis undergraduates. I am a member of NSGC and chairperson of the Genetic Counseling Special Interest Group for the International Society of Prenatal Diagnosis. Most recently, I was a featured presenter at their annual meeting in Berlin.

Additionally, successful applicants often have experience with shadowing genetic counselors and medical geneticists, interviewing genetic counselors and exposure to individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities. Exposure to crises hotlines, support groups and community activities related to individuals with disability and genetic conditions is also helpful.

Chelsey Burden grew up in the small town of Pilot Point, Texas. She graduated from Texas A&M University in May 2014 with a degree in Genetics. While at Texas A&M, Chelsey volunteered for the Student Counseling HelpLine and Planned Parenthood. She was also involved in multiple leadership organizations on campus and completed her senior thesis on the Effects of Exercise Intensity and Genetic Background on Gene Expression in Skeletal Muscle. To prepare for graduate school, Chelsey spent time shadowing various prenatal, pediatrics, and Huntingtons genetic counselors. In her free time Chelsey loves watching sports, drinking good coffee, and exploring Greensboro. She is more than happy to answer any questions about genetic counseling or the UNCG program!

Program Leadership – Genetic Counseling

The Genetic Counseling Training Program, leading to a Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling, is a two-year academic program comprised of didactic course work, laboratory exposure, research experience and extensive clinical training. The program, directed by Anne L. Matthews, R.N, Ph.D., is an integral component of the teaching and research programs in the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences (G&GS) at CWRU under the leadership of Dr. Anthony Wynshaw-Boris, MD. Ph.D., chairman of G&GS. Program leadership also includes Rebecca Darrah, MA, MS, PhD, Associate Director and the program's medical director, Shawn McCandless M.D., Associate Professor of G&GS and Pediatrics and Director of the Center for Human Genetics, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. The Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) and graduates of the program are eligible to apply for Active Candidate Status and sit for the American Board of Genetic Counseling certification examination.

Genetic Counseling Research – Penn Medicine

The overall objective of the Genetic Counseling Program is to prepare students with the appropriate knowledge and experiences to function as genetic counselors in a wide range of settings and roles. With unprecedented advances in our understanding of the genetic and molecular control of gene expression and development, and in our ability to apply this knowledge clinically, the Program strives to train students who can interface between patients, clinicians and molecular and human geneticists. Students gain insightful and multifaceted skills that will enable them to be effective genetic counselors, aware of the many new technical advances and often-difficult ethical, legal and social issues that have surfaced in the light of the Human Genome Project. Graduates of the Program will be prepared to work in a variety of settings including both adult and pediatric genetics clinics, specialty clinics such as cancer genetics, cardiovascular genetics and metabolic clinics, and prenatal diagnosis clinics, as well as in areas of research or commercial genetics laboratories relevant to genetic counseling and human genetics.
