Plants get carbon dioxide from the air through their leaves. The carbon dioxide diffuses through small holes in the underside of the leaf called stomata. (singular: stoma. plural: stomata)
The lower part of the leaf has loose-fitting cells, to allow carbon dioxide to reach the other cells in the leaf. This also allows the oxygen produced in photosynthesis to leave the leaf easily.
Carbon dioxide is present in the air we breathe, at very low concentrations. Even though it forms about .04% of the air, it is a needed factor in light-independent photosynthesis.

What Mineral Elements Do Plants Need
If plants don’t get enough of one of these important elements, they can’t function correctly. Without carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (from carbon dioxide and water), plants can’t grow at all. And even though plants need smaller amounts of other elements, each missing element causes a specific problem.
Nitrogen, taken up by plant roots from the soil after it has been processed into a soluble form by microorganisms, is essential for plants to develop proteins. These proteins are important for the development of cells within the plant. As such, nitrogen is needed for robust plant growth, speedy development of shoots, healthy flower bud development and a good quality harvest. It is also an essential chemical in the photosynthesis process, by which plants convert sunlight into useable energy. As such, you can tell if your soil is low in nitrogen if plant leaves turn yellowish and brown at the tips (however, be advised that because plants can move nitrogen around to benefit new growth, some old leaves will go yellow anyway, even if nitrogen is not deficient.).

Too little potassium in the soil will lead to leaves curling and becoming distorted. Root systems are also unlikely to develop, particularly in young plants, while stalks can appear weak and spindly.
